Route Map showing Day 0 of the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, a flight from Washington DC to Portland Oregon plus Mandy's bicycle loaded on a cart in a box marked "Bike Flights"

I shipped my bicycle to Tillamook, OR and I'm about to board my flight from Washington, DC to Portland, OR.

I'm pleased to introduce here my traveling companion, Ebonezy (watch the video to learn more about the name).

And here are the top 10 reasons I'm riding my bicycle across the United State from sea to shining sea.

10. To celebrate 30 years since taking my first oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. I want to experience the places and people that make up the nation I serve in slow motion.

9. To practice the discipline of sustained solitude and peace in purpose.

8. To exercise courage (it's muscle!).

7. To enjoy the adventure of a journey.

6. To grieve recent losses.

5. To feel the freedom of the wind in my hair and rushing across my ears...every day!

4. To boost creativity by seeing things from a new, slower perspective.

3. To shift gears and recharge in the great outdoors.

2. To achieve a life goal (I've dreamed of this for half of my life!).

1. To experience deep rest and replenishment mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Meet my traveling companion, Ebonezy. The bicycle is configured to carry 1.5 gallons (6L) of water and essential cargo including camping gear and a variety bicycle parts and tools. I upgraded this 15-year friend to also include a mid-drive motor configured for pedal assist as well as 3 different handlebar configurations.

  • I enjoyed the evening at the Society Hotel (a hostel) in Portland, Oregon. The rooftop and café were both phenomenal.
  • Thanks to my friend Lori for taking care of my two plants and keeping an "emergency box" to mail to me.
