Route Map showing Day 36 of the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, Eads Colorado to Scott City Kansas

Thinking about the rhythms of pedaling a bicycle yesterday inspired me to think about exactly how each one of our lives is a unique song—a superposition of many frequencies that creates signature harmonies.

Enjoy the video and tell us all a little about your song in the comments below.

On the trail, I intended to do my first century today. During this trip I've already done many metric centuries as well as several 90-something-mile (150-ish km) days.

But I won some bonus mileage today too. I was enjoying the wonderfully wide shoulders of the newly paved road. There was more than 6 feet (2 m) separation from the high speed traffic. The road was wide open and free from signs. And the southern sun was evening out my tan.

But wait! I'm not supposed to be heading south. Unfortunately that was 10.5 miles (17 km) after my wrong turn (which happened only 3 miles (5 km) into my trip). So I earned 21 bonus miles (34 bonus kilometers), on top of my planned 103 miles (166 km). I never anticipated doing a 124-mile (200-km) day during this trip. But somehow I still made it to my stop before sunset.

In spite of the extended journey, I marked the milestone of entering Kansas today!

Today I entered my 6th state and 3rd time zone on this journey. Hello Kansas!

Making memories
  • I stopped at historical markers remembering two tragic events: 1) the Sand Creek Massacre where a hope for peace turned into a bloodbath for the Cheyenne and Arapahoe people and 2) the Towner Bus Tragedy where 5 school children died when the school bus was trapped in a blizzard for 33 hours.
  • I loved my stay at the Lazy R Motel. I've found several quaint, family-owned affordable, hyper-clean, rural inns like this one that have greatly exceeded my expectations. I'm never going to want to go back to the fancy urban chains!
  • I saw a pair of Ringneck Pheasants alongside the road today. I recognized them from my grandpa's cologne bottles that somehow realistically took the shape and colors of these beautiful birds.
  • I watched a beautiful sunset over the Great Plains. Facing east, it was as if a beautiful blanket gradually transitioning from deep blue, to violet, to rose was being drawn over me as the edges were magnetized to connect with the sun. And facing west, the glowing orange sun sank into the golden wheat fields and outlined the the forming dark storm clouds to the south with a neon pink glow.
  • I experienced the strong aroma of cattle country. And hay. I had nearly forgotten that I'm terribly allergic to ragweed. The grasses reminded me of that today. My eyes are itchy and so swollen that it was hard to see at times.
